Useful information

A. The Venue

The conference will be held at the Drakopoulos Amphitheatre in the (Historical) Central Building of the University of Athens. The building is located at the heart of Athens city centre. It stands in the middle of a complex of three buildings (the other two being the Academy of Athens and the National Library) which is known as the Akadimia (Academy) and it is defined by the Panepistimou (nowadays called Eleftheriou Venizelou, however everybody knows and refers to it with the old name) and the Akadimias streets. The entrance is from Panepistimiou street. A map link is given below:

            http://maps.uoa.gr/en

The easiest and fastest way to reach the venue is by Metro (Red line). You will want to get off at the Panepistimio (meaning University) station/stop. In addition, most of the bus and trolley bus lines that go through Athens city centre pass by or terminate there.

B. Getting to and from the Athens International Airport

The Athens International Airport (El. Venizelos Airport) connects to the city centre and the suburbs as well as the surrounding districts via the toll highway Attiki Odos, the Athens Suburban Railway as well as the Metro and the Express Buses. Also, an orderly taxi queue awaits you outside if you prefer to hire a cab. If driving yourself is your preference, there are plenty of rental car agencies located on site. For more information on the Athens International Airport go to:

http://www.aia.gr

Below we have collected some information concerning public transportation options which serve the Athens International Airport.

This is the fastest way to get to or from the airport. The airport is accessible via Metro Line 3 “Egaleo - Athens International Airport” (The Blue line). The ticket costs 6.00 Euro for a single fare. Metro trains depart from the Airport train station just opposite the Departures/Arrivals building.

Operating Hours from/to Athens International Airport:
- Egaleo – Athens International Airport: 05:30 - 22:57
- Athens International Airport – Egaleo: 06:35 – 23:35

More information on the Attiko Metro at: http://www.amel.gr

There are 4 express bus routes which run throughout Athens (including the Port of Piraeus) and connect to the Airport:

- X95: Syntagma - Airport
- X96: Piraeus - Airport
- X97: Dafni Metro Station - Airport
- X93: Kifissos Intercity Bus Station - Airport

X95 is the line that brings you to Athens city centre (it terminates at Syntagma Square). A ticket on the EXPRESS bus lines costs 3.20 Euros and it is valid for only one trip to or from the airport. You can buy a ticket for the EXRESS bus (a) at the ticket kiosk at the airport, (b) directly from the driver, (c) at the ticket kiosks located throughout the city, or (d) at all Metro stations. EXPRESS buses depart from outside the Arrivals level of the Departures/Arrivals building and operate on a 24 hour basis.

Detailed information on the EXPRESS Airport Buses: http://www.oasa.gr/index.asp?tml=1&pageid=103&menu=2&pg=1

A map of the EXPRESS Airport Buses routes can be found here: http://www.oasa.gr/pdf/aerodromio.pdf

The Suburban Railway is a nice option but it doesn't run as frequently as the Metro does. Tickets cost 6.00 Euros for a single fare. Suburban trains depart from the Airport train station just opposite the Departures/Arrivals building.

Operating Hours from/to Athens International Airport:
- Port of Piraeus/Athens – Athens International Airport: 06:14 - 22:38
- Athens International Airport – Port of Piraeus/Athens: 07:20 - 23:50

More information on the Suburban Railway: http://www.proastiakos.gr

There are plenty of taxis in queue outside the Arrivals level at the airport any time day or night. Depending where your destination is in Athens, a taxi ride will cost you between 35-45 euros (including baggage and the Attiki Odos toll). If you arrive after midnight, the fare will be higher.

C. Public Transportation in Athens

Athens is served by a network of bus, trolley bus, metro and tram lines. Information on the public transportation network of Athens are available at http://www.oasa.gr and at the 185 telephone number. Maps and guides are available at the information stands in the airport. You can also download them from:

http://www.oasa.gr/index.asp?tml=1&pageid=116&menu=2&pg=1

There are 3 Metro lines:
- Line 1 (The Green Line): Port of Piraeus - Kifissia
- Line 2 (The Red Line): Aghios Dimitrios - Aghios Antonios
- Line 3 (The Blue Line): Egaleo - Athens International Airport

Trains run from 05:00 to 00:15. On Fridays and Saturdays the Red and Blue lines run from 05:00 to 02:00. More information on the Attiko Metro at:http://www.amel.gr

There are many bus and trolley bus lines which serve Athens. They run basically from the earlier morning hours until around midnight.

The Tram has 3 lines which serve the city centre and the Athens sea-side delta. The Tram connects the centre of Athens with Paleo Faliro from where it branches out along the coastal avenue to Asklipiio Voulas on the one end and to the Peace & Friendship Stadium (SEF) on the other end. The Tram lines are the following:

- Thucydides 3: Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) – Asklipiio Voulas
- Aristotle 4: Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) – Syntagma Square
- Plato 5: Syntagma Square – Asklipiio VoulasThe tram runs from 05:00 to 01:00. On Fridays and Saturdays it operates on a 24 hour basis.

More information about the Tram at: http://www.tramsa.gr

There is an integrated ticket for all means of transportation which costs 1 Euro and it is valid for one hour and a half. During that time you can use it for any means of transportation and as many times as you want. You have to validate your ticket on the first means of transportation you use. If the time expires and you are still inside e.g. a bus, you have to validate your ticket once again in order to complete your last ride. Notice that this ticket does not cover trips to and from the airport, so on the Blue line of the Metro it can only be used for the part “Egaleo – Koropi”. There are also a 24 hour ticket, which is valid for 24 hours from its first validation and costs 3.00 Euros, and a Week Pass Ticket (7 days ticket) which costs 10.00 euros. These tickets also cover all your trolley, bus, metro, tram and suburban railway rides, but they do not cover trips to and from the airport. There is also a tourist 3 days ticket, which costs 15.00 Euros and covers all trolley, bus, metro, tram and suburban railway rides including trips to and from the airport. You can buy your tickets at the Metro stations, as well as at the ticket kiosks, which are generally located close to the bus terminals and stops and at the major landmarks (there are plenty of them around the venue, especially at Akadimias Street). You can also buy tickets at most newspaper stands and commercial kiosks.

G. Going out neighbourhoods

Psirri
(near the Monastiraki Metro Station – Blue line)

Psirri offers artistically designed venues with good food, great music of all kinds (mostly ethnic, jazz and rock) and an overall ambiance. You can also find many mezedopolia serving Greek appetizers, tapas, wine, ouzo and rakomelo (a potent alcoholic drink made with the Cretan raki, and honey), tavernas and grill houses. For more information: www.psirri.gr

Gazi
(Kerameikos Metro Staion – Blue line)

The industrial district of Gazi (named after the abandoned gas factory around which it is developed) hosts many galleries, cafés, mainstream bars, restaurants, clubs and Greek nightclubs (featuring live Greek pop singers). Most of these venues are trademarked by their industrial design as they are housed in restored factories and storehouses.

Kolonaki
(near the venue – within walking distance)

This popular Athenian neighborhood is where you will find contemporary style eateries, in addition to all-day tavernas, grills, bars and outdoor cafés. Kolonaki is a staple dining and entertainment destination, catering to the city's urban working professionals who enjoy an after work cocktail at many of its bars that are open - and busy - until after midnight, even on weekdays. The area's many restaurants range from the affordable to the expensive, with Greek and international menus. Some of the streets where the trendy bars are plentiful are: Haritos, Skoufa, Ploutarchou and Loukaniou.

Plaka – Monastiraki – Thission
(around the Monastiraki and Thission Metro Stations)

These classic Athenian neighbourhoods are perfect for a walk, since the amazing view of the Acropolis makes them very popular spots for locals and visitors. You will not find big clubs here, but there are plenty of cafés and tavernas around the Monastiraki Square and its Flea Market, at Adrianou Str. and at the pedestrian Apostolou Pavlou Str. Some very lively bars can be found in Iraklidon Str. at the Thission area.
